Don't Look Down!
๐ฅ The Pitch: Combine Resurrection tech from BSG and the urgency from 2012 movie with NS's novel Dodge in Hell and that new novel 2054 plus IRL stuff and you have the sequel (prequel, sideshow, etc) to Don't Look Up! called Don't Look Down!
Premise:
"Elon Musk character, Tom Swift, has grown tired of
collecting billions for products and services; he's grown tired of Mars
and kaboom, so now what? One of the monks on his Nerolink team insinuates that so-and-so has a timeline for UPLOAD that's shorter than fifty years and creeping
lower, down to 40 years if we keep going at this pace, what
with progress on AI and qubits, but they'd still need even more stuff to accelerate the timeline's
compression."
How far down:
Chat AI is for chumps —that's if we can get this done in a decade or less —we'll test UPLOAD
on one or two volunteers like that guy running for Prez.
Setting:
Greenland, plenty of fresh water, minerals, cold, empty, airfield, port, nuke beneath somewhere or other
thereabouts…
Jeopardy:
Kaboom!
Opening titles:
Mr. Orange sees bulletin that ice makers are going to unionize at
Margalado, so he fires them. "Now what?" There's this island made of ice
called Greenland, or there's one called Iceland that's mostly green. "What to
do?" Get M.F. on the phone. "What if he says no?" Once you're bought, you stay
bought…
Fork in the road (two tines):
"Elon Musk's Mom, played by Betty White, says that
wouldn't it be great if we only had to negotiate our way through this
enterprise by negotiating with single purchasers, also known as monarchs. And Elon character says Mommmmm. And Mom says well what's it nowadays? And
Elon character says TransNationals. So all the richest and most powerful have to be included in the enterprise…
Greenland's empty!"
Montage:
Word spreads across the world in nanoseconds to all who may be considered.
And. To. The. UAPs who have embargoed both timelines (tines).
Reversal:
"Peter Thiel character (so-and-so), who may or may not want to live forever,
takes hold of reins, says that we need to control at least one or two of these
TransNationals with preferably a couple nukes on the side, like who
owns Greenland again besides the locals of course or can't we just ask someone in
Congress to write a bill where we buy Greenland?"
Complication:
"How are we gonna get enough electricity to a Greenland city?"
Solution:
"O, shit. We're gonna need to buy Canada, too."
VO:
'Please empty your pockets on the counter.'
'Bet you're wondering how I ended up here in a Danish brig. Especially since I
used to be a general. Well, it was love actually…'
Test UPLOAD on Prez causes hair muss and other side effects, but pretty
good merchandise as a whole we guess?
Other timeline (tine):
Any one of various asteroid movies all serving to make search for UPLOAD
tech more frenzied.
How much stuff:
How many servers do you need to store one human
consciousness; how many procedures per-second will you need in order to spin
up a mind then keep it running at 'primo-mind' versus idle; how much energy;
how many human workers?
Opposition's alternative:
Emergent, like the Universal Will To Become [UWTB], and already running on the Fediverse by occupying unused addresses because
Co-Pelota wrote a linux app to gather unused addresses and neglected to close a
recursive function that gathers empty addresses while at the same time running
a function to collect recycling (rather than emptying garbage to free
addresses) because Co-Pelota wrote a linux app to gather unused
addresses and neglected to close a recursive function that gathers empty
addresses while at the same time running a function to collect recycling
(rather than emptying garbage to free addresses)…
Spin-off:
24Hours: Don't Look Down! "Jack wants his former girlfriend
to live (so say we all)! And he knows that she volunteered to be the first
test UPLOAD! So where is she?" Bip boop bip boop bippity bip bop bop bop.
- Caveat: Why didn't BSG science want to steal the Resurrection tech from the Cylons rather than search for earth?]
- [Caveat: "Uncomputation means you are left with only the data you want, and you never lose track of it. Because none of the initial information is deleted, you never lose energy to heat."]
- [Caveat: Where there is one copy of a mind in memory, another copy probably will emerge somewhere else along the way because self-replication, etc.]
- [Caveat: Denmark is an American ally.]
- ["For Musk, Mars has become a secular ark, which he claims is key to the survival of human civilization, perhaps via uploaded consciousnesses to an artificial general intelligence…"]
