Electronic lab rat for language

"This requires care, if only because the AI–brain alignment doesn’t seem to encompass many cognitive skills other than language.

"The models’ reputation for churning out shaky logic and plausible gibberish is well-deserved.

"Nonetheless, the models have already offered strong evidence that the brain relies on prediction to make sense of an incoming word stream, for example.

"And the models have helped researchers identify certain sentences that whip the brain’s language regions into a frenzy of activity —potentially useful tools for probing these regions further.

"'This is not to say that the AIs are a perfect model of the human language system,' says Martin Schrimpf, a neuroscientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. 'But at least with the available data, they come really close'."
