"This situation will present immense challenges. 

"Many of us adopt a traditional hierarchy of moral concern that places the most intelligent beings at the top of the hierarchy of sentient beings. 

"Conveniently, homo sapiens have been on the top rung of the ladder, and our ethical systems generally subordinate the needs of those beneath us to those on the top tier. 

"But in the hypothetical case, AI seems to outrank us. So, to be consistent, shouldn’t we humans renounce our position in favor of the needs of a more advanced intelligence? 

"Or, should we reject intelligence as a basis for moral status, prompting a long overdue reflection on the ethical treatment of nonhuman animals?"

Digital ID tracking system

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has moved forward with regulations establishing a smartphone-based national digital ID and tracking system, disregarding objections from organizations like the Identity Project. These new rules are based on the REAL-ID Act of 2005 and set the standards for how states will issue digital versions of driver’s licenses or ID cards, which will be accepted by the TSA and other federal agencies for certain official purposes. However, these rules do not extend to airline travel, where no ID is legally required, despite the TSA’s misleading statements to the contrary. Under the TSA’s new regulations, digital IDs can only be issued to individuals who already possess a physical driver’s license or state-issued ID card.
