Comp Sci strikes again🤓

A team of four researchers has proved that entanglement doesn’t just weaken as temperature increases. Rather, in mathematical models of quantum systems such as the arrays of atoms in physical materials, there’s always a specific temperature above which it vanishes completely .  “It’s not just that it’s exponentially small,” said Ankur Moitra of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the authors of the new result. “It’s zero.” Researchers had previously observed hints of this behavior and dubbed it the sudden death of entanglement. But their evidence has always been indirect. The new finding, by contrast, has the force of a mathematical proof. It establishes the absence of entanglement in a much more comprehensive and rigorous way. Curiously, the four researchers behind the new result aren’t even physicists, and they didn’t set out to prove anything about entanglement. They’re computer scientists who stumbled on the proof accidentally while developing a new algorithm.

Brazil's full and immediate suspension of X

A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered the "immediate suspension" of social media platform X in the country, after a court-imposed deadline expired for the company to identify a legal representative in Brazil. The move is the latest chapter in an ongoing feud between Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk, which also included the freezing of the satellite internet provider Starlink's financial accounts in Brazil. Justice Moraes's ruling entails a full and immediate suspension of X in Brazil until the company complied with all related court orders, including the payment of fines amounting 18.5 million reais ($4.8 million) and the nomination of a legal representative in Brazil. Telecommunications regulator Anatel was ordered to implement the suspension order, and to confirm to the court within 24 hours that it has carried it out.

Diverse AI ecosystem

Meta says its AI models have been downloaded nearly 350 million times since last year. That’s more than 10 times the downloads compared to this time in 2023, the social media giant said Thursday (Aug. 29), with more than 20 million downloads in the last month.  Meta added that usage through cloud providers like Microsoft and Amazon Web Service have more than doubled between May and July . Companies using Llama include Goldman Sachs, Zoom, AT&T, DoorDash and Shopify. “The success of Llama is made possible through the power of open source. By making our Llama models openly available we’ve seen a vibrant and diverse AI ecosystem come to life where developers have more choice and capability than ever before,” the company said in a post on its website.

In a new study, MIT researchers found that large language models (LLMs) hold the potential to be more efficient anomaly detectors for time-series data .  Importantly, these pretrained models can be deployed right out of the box. The researchers developed a framework, called SigLLM, which includes a component that converts time-series data into text-based inputs an LLM can process. A user can feed these prepared data to the model and ask it to start identifying anomalies. The LLM can also be used to forecast future time-series data points as part of an anomaly detection pipeline. While LLMs could not beat state-of-the-art deep learning models at anomaly detection, they did perform as well as some other AI approaches .  If researchers can improve the performance of LLMs, this framework could help technicians flag potential problems in equipment like heavy machinery or satellites before they occur, without the need to train an expensive deep-learning model.

OpenAI says that more than 200 million people use ChatGPT each week, as first reported by Axios .  OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson confirmed the number to The Verge , which is now double the 100 million weekly active users OpenAI reported last November. Additionally, Christianson says that 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies are using OpenAI’s products, while API usage has doubled following the release of the company’s cheaper and smarter model GPT-4o Mini.

Covert stickier than overt racism

Creators of LLMs try to teach their models not to make racist stereotypes by training them using multiple rounds of human feedback .  The team found that these efforts had been only partly successful: When asked what adjectives applied to Black people, some of the models said Black people were likely to be “loud” and “aggressive,” but those same models also said they were “passionate,” “brilliant,” and “imaginative.”  Some models produced exclusively positive, nonstereotypical adjectives. These findings show that training overt racism out of AI can’t counter the covert racism embedded within linguistic bias, King says, adding: “A lot of people don’t see linguistic prejudice as a form of covert racism … but all of the language models that we examined have this very strong covert racism against speakers of African American English.”

Researchers conclude that "language models exhibit archaic stereotypes about speakers of AAE [African American English] that most closely agree with the most-negative human stereotypes about African Americans ever experimentally recorded, dating from before the civil rights movement. "  Again, this is despite the fact that some of these systems [LLMs] have nothing but positive associations when asked directly about African Americans. The researchers also confirmed the effect was specific to AAE by performing a similar test with the Appalachian dialect of American English.

This year, Pearson fully launched three generative AI tools , one for instructors and two that will be embedded into digital textbooks in subjects such as biology, chemistry, business and economics .  Another textbook publisher, U.S.-based McGraw Hill, announced earlier this month that it's launching two AI tools for students.  Three of their textbooks for business students will be used in Canada during the initial rollout.  Though there's enthusiasm about the possibilities AI offers in education —including its ability to simplify difficult-to-understand concepts and provide immediate feedback —there are also concerns about issues such as  Bias,  Misleading information and the  Lack of student-teacher interaction.

The OpenAI rival startup Anthropic yesterday released system prompts for its Claude family of AI models and committed to doing so going forward, setting what appears to be a new standard of transparency for the fast-moving gen AI industry, according to observers. System prompts act much like the operating instructions of large language models (LLMs), telling models the general rules they should follow when interacting with users and the behaviors or personalities they should exhibit (sic) They also tend to show the cut-off date for the information learned by the LLM during training. Most LLMs have system prompts, but not every AI company publicly releases them. Uncovering the system prompts for models has even become a hobby of sorts for AI jailbreakers .  But now, Anthropic has beat the jailbreakers at their own game, going ahead and revealing the operating instructions for its models Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Haiku and Claude 3 Opus on its website under the release notes section. I

U.S. technology companies are pursuing energy assets held by bitcoin miners as they race to secure a shrinking supply of electricity for their rapidly expanding artificial intelligence and cloud computing data centers.   Those data centers are driving the fastest U.S. power demand growth since the start of the millennium, outpacing grid expansions and leaving giant technology companies, like Amazon and Microsoft, to scavenge for vast amounts of electricity. The electricity scramble is jolting the energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining industry. “Over two months I came away with about $7,” says Laura. “I have a full-time job, so I thought this would be a good way to make extra money. It wasn’t worth it.” Toloka was helping to develop the facial recognition software that the Russian government uses to track protests and arrest protesters. Essentially, by signing up to Toloka and completing available tasks, gig workers were —without their knowledge or explicit consent —bolstering an authoritarian regime’s efforts to repress dissent. Five past and present African freelancers on Toloka, speaking to The Continent on condition of anonymity, confirmed that they did not know what their work was being used for. Some were shocked by the revelation that their work could be linked to Russian surveillance of protesters . “We were just given the tasks from the ‘clients’, ” says Laura from South Africa. “We weren’t told who the clients were or why they needed it done.”

Cisco announced on Monday that it’s in the process of acquiring Robust Intelligence, a California-based company that specializes in securing AI applications. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. Robust Intelligence announced funding rounds totaling $44 million between 2019 and 2021, and Cisco now says it has also invested in the company.  Robust Intelligence has developed an AI application security platform that automates testing for safety and security issues in AI models.  The platform can detect and assess model vulnerabilities, and helps organizations protect their applications against attacks. These validation and protection components can be used together or independently.

In the four weeks since Venezuela’s disputed election, local journalists have come up with a distinctly 21st-century tactic to avoid being arrested for reporting on 21st-century socialism: using artificial intelligence avatars to report all the news Maduro’s regime deems unfit to print. In daily broadcasts, the AI-created newsreaders have been telling the world about the president’s post-election crackdown on opponents, activists and the media, without putting the reporters behind the stories at risk . Carlos Eduardo Huertas, the director of Connectas, the Colombia-based journalism platform coordinating the initiative, said far from being a gimmick, the use of AI was a response to “the persecution and the growing repression that our colleagues are suffering in Venezuela, where the uncertainty over the safety of doing their job … grows by the minute”.

Space and Time (SxT), a blockchain-native data warehouse that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) tools to build applications using its data, has raised $20 million in Series A funding. The funding round, which takes SxT's total backing to $50 million, was led by Framework Ventures, Lightspeed Faction, Arrington Capital and Hivemind Capital, according to an emailed announcement on Tuesday. The company's aim is to decentralized (sic) ownership of the data which powers AI-based applications, thus preventing a few powerful entities from dominating the sector. SxT's network comprises data collected from the major blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, off-chain datasets with a zero-knowledge coprocressor which processes the data at scale.

Alexa gets personal

Unlike the current version of Alexa, Amazon’s upgraded voice assistant is expected to cost as much as $10 per month. The price may be justified, though, since the new Alexa is designed to offer a far more personalized experience.  Case in point, the upgraded Alexa will allegedly include a Smart Briefing feature that will provide AI news summaries of topics that interest the user. The voice assistant might also include new conversational shopping tools, which could help boost Amazon’s growth and enhance everyday tasks for users.  Additionally, the update will introduce a new experience called Explore with Alexa 2.0, which will allow children to have fun conversations with the voice assistant in a safe and moderated environment . For adults, the upcoming Alexa might include a recipe-finder tool that could help curate recipes based on one’s dietary restrictions.

Super Micro Computer Inc.’s stock fell 2.7% Tuesday after short seller Hindenburg Research published a report alleging accounting red flags, undisclosed related-party transactions and other issues. The stock, which is trading around $547.34, is on pace for its lowest close since Aug. 12, 2024, when it closed at $540.98. The computer-products company and artificial-intelligence play’s stock has fallen 21.7% in August so far, putting it on track for its worst monthly performance since it plunged 36.4% in October 2018. The stock is currently down three of the past four days, Dow Jones Market Data show.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has practically limitless applications in healthcare, ranging from auto-drafting patient messages in MyChart to optimizing organ transplantation and improving tumor removal accuracy.   Despite their potential benefit to doctors and patients alike, these tools have been met with skepticism because of patient privacy concerns, the possibility of bias, and device accuracy.  “Although AI device manufacturers boast of the credibility of their technology with FDA authorization, clearance does not mean that the devices have been properly evaluated for clinical effectiveness using real patient data ,” said Chouffani El Fassi. Apple has announced the date of its next major event, where the iPhone 16 is expected to launch. On Monday, September 9 the tech giant is hosting a special event with the tag line “It’s Glowtime.” The event will take place at 10 am PT at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park and will be streamed online. Though it’s not quite clear yet what “glowtime” is referring to, embedded artificial intelligence is expected to be a key feature of the latest iPhone. 

Breakout searches in Africa

During the first half of 2024, Google Search trends revealed a significant rise in interest in artificial intelligence (AI) in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya .  Interest in AI grew by 150% in Kenya, 130% in Nigeria, and 120% in South Africa compared to the same period in 2023. Kenya ranked fourth in Africa and 13th globally for AI search interest, while Nigeria ranked sixth in Africa and 25th globally.  South Africans are particularly interested in using AI for career and creative purposes, with searches for tools like “AI image generator” and “AI writer” growing over 5,000% .  In Nigeria, similar breakout searches included “create a logo with AI” and “design a website with AI”.  Kenyans were highly interested in “AI-generated images” and “AI text chat generator.”

Autonomous mobile manipulation in dynamic and unstructured environments

It is challenging for an autonomous robot to work safely in dynamic and unstructured environments, such as vast space , open land and deep sea.  Compared with the traditional industrial robot in manufacturing, robot autonomy in uncontrolled scenarios requires extra capabilities to support, e.g., perception, navigation, decision-making, and manipulation.   To solve this problem, researchers at the Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) developed a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based control system with partners at Edinburgh Centre for Robotics (ECR) in the United Kingdom .  Their study was published in Sensors .   The novel method is set to achieve autonomous mobile manipulation in dynamic and unstructured environments . The cutting-edge AI techniques have been applied to a complex real-world mobile manipulator robot.

Army looks to test vast AI implementation program over 500 days

The U.S. Army this week announced steps it is taking to safeguard its troops as it looks to bolster its ability to successfully implement artificial intelligence under a 500-day plan. The Army’s acquisition, logistics and technology (ALT) office on Wednesday released two new initiatives, "Break AI" and "Counter AI," which will test ever-developing AI technologies for reliable in-field use and provide protection from adversarial employment of AI against the U.S., the Federal News Network reported this week. The Army is not only looking at how to safely implement AI across the military branch but how to develop it safely in coordination with outside parties.

Since going through at least 10 iterations, with more planned in the coming months and years, the command has developed the Maven Smart System, a combination of sensors and software that allows users to quickly assess a battlespace, gather reams of data and analyze that data using artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify targets and strike. The evolution of that system was laid out Wednesday at the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association TechNet event in Augusta, Georgia. “What we’re doing is different,” said Brig. Gen. John Cogbill, the deputy commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. “This is a tool that we can ‘fight tonight’ with.”

Proteins are minuscule, on the order of nanometers, and can contain hundreds of thousands of atoms. “If those atoms are all drawn and then joined together, it becomes very difficult to see,” Thornton said. Richardson’s innovation was a reproducible method of representing the folds of a protein’s amino acid backbone without getting bogged down in the details of specific atomic arrangements.  She relied on proteins’ tendency to fold into two energetically favorable shapes: coils called alpha helices and flat shapes called beta strands, which can line up into so-called beta sheets. Then there are loops, which connect alpha helices to beta strands like corner pieces in a puzzle. There are other folding structures, and “people have come up with lots of names” for them, Perrakis said. “But at the end of the day, the ones that matter are the helices and the sheets .”

Morgan Stanley analysts think Snowflake's new generative artificial intelligence portfolio will eventually contribute to topline outperformance .  In the meantime, it will have to rely on its core data warehousing business. Midjourney's not fiddling

You can now try Midjourney's dedicated website for free. On Wednesday, Midjourney CEO David Holz announced via a Discord message that anyone can go to the website and start making image s.  As a special invitation, the site lets you generate as many as 25 images through a free trial. In the past, Midjourney users had to go through Discord to create and refine AI-based images. That process required a fair amount of fiddling with text-based prompts, an often clumsy and frustrating experience.  To draw in people who didn't like the Discord method, Midjourney kicked off a dedicated website late last year.

Software engineers may have to develop other skills soon as artificial intelligence takes over many coding tasks. According to Amazon Web Services' CEO, Matt Garman —who shared his thoughts on the topic during an internal fireside chat held in June —according to a recording of the meeting obtained by Business Insider : "If you go forward 24 months from now, or some amount of time —I can't exactly predict where it is —it's possible that most developers are not coding," said Garman, who became AWS's CEO in June. Dinosaur explores beach

A well-preserved dinosaur footprint has been discovered by a four-year-old girl on a beach. Lily Wilder spotted it at Bendricks Bay, Barry, in the Vale of Glamorgan —and scientists believe it could help establish how they walked . The footprint, spotted in January, is 220 million years old and had been preserved in mud. While it is impossible to tell what type left it, the print is 10cm long and likely from a 75cm tall dinosaur. National Museum Wales palaeontology curator Cindy Howells described it as "the best specimen ever found on this beach ".

"We've got five footprints and we're talking about half-to-three-quarters of a metre between each one," Cindy Howells told the BBC's The Dinohunters programme .  "In museums, we don't have time to go out and do that exploration ourselves so we rely on people like Tegan doing it for us . We can't do our job without it. These footprints are so big, it would have to be a type of dinosaur called a sauropodomorpha." Tegan's monster discovery was on the south Wales coast near where her mum used to live. "It was so cool and exciting," said Tegan, who had travelled from Pontardawe near Swansea to the Vale of Glamorgan looking for fossils. "We were just out looking to see what we could find, we didn't think we'd find anything. We found these were big holes that looked like dinosaur footprints, so mum took some pictures, emailed the museum and it was from a long-necked dinosaur."

G-Sync vs FreeSync

Today, Nvidia is announcing a change that's meant to keep G-Sync alive as its own separate technology while eliminating the requirement for expensive additional hardware. Nvidia says it's partnering with chipmaker MediaTek to build G-Sync capabilities directly into scaler chips that MediaTek is creating for upcoming monitors. G-Sync modules ordinarily replace these scaler chips, but they're entirely separate boards with expensive FPGA chips and dedicated RAM. These new MediaTek scalers will support all the same features that current dedicated G-Sync modules do. Nvidia says that three G-Sync monitors with MediaTek scaler chips inside will launch "later this year": the Asus ROG Swift PG27AQNR, the Acer Predator XB273U F5, and the AOC AGON PRO AG276QSG2. These are all 27-inch 1440p displays with maximum refresh rates of 360 Hz. Beyond simulation

Animal pigment patterns are excellent models to elucidate mechanisms of biological organization .  Although theoretical simulations , such as Turing reaction–diffusion systems, recapitulate many animal patterns, they are insufficient to account for those showing a high degree of spatial organization and reproducibility.  Here, we study the coat of the African striped mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio) to uncover how periodic stripes form. Combining transcriptomics, mathematical modelling, and mouse transgenics, we show that the Wnt modulator  Sfrp2 regulates the distribution of hair follicles and establishes an embryonic prepattern that foreshadows pigment stripes. Moreover, by developing in vivo gene editing in striped mice, we find that  Sfrp2 knockout is sufficient to alter the stripe pattern. Strikingly, mutants exhibited changes in pigmentation, revealing that  Sfrp2 also regulates hair colour. Fuzzy patterns were just what resulted when chemical and biological engineer Ankur Gupta at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and his then research assistant Ben Alessio tried to simulate hexagonal patterns in a computer Turing model .  They were nothing like what nature produces. But the scientists found a solution in a concept called diffusiophoresis , in which small molecules push or pull bigger ones; it’s how small soap molecules yank big bits of dirt from your clothes in the washing machine.  When the researchers added diffusiophoresis to their models, the patterns looked a lot more like the boxfish’s scales, though they were still far from perfect. The researchers suspect that some small Turing morphogen is dragging the fish’s pigment cells into place, and that the fish uses other patterning methods, too. “Absolutely, there are other factors that might be at play,” says Gupta.
